COVID-19 SAMEDAY REPORT, #1: Winter 2022-2023 and COVID-19
Over the last few weeks, experts have been sounding the alarms for a COVID-19 winter surge due to two new variants emerging in the United States. These two new variants are spreading quickly, and already account for almost 20% of new positive cases (Scientific American). Subsequently, we have also seen COVID-19 hospitalizations rise in cities like New York, suggesting that the rest of the US is on track for a difficult winter (CNBC). While this does sound worrying, experts have predicted a winter surge for months, suggesting that changes in behavior were likely to cause cases to increase. Recent studies show that these two variants may only slightly exacerbate a surge that was already in the works. So, what do you need to know about these new strains, their symptoms, and how can Sameday Health help you stay healthy this winter?
New Variants
The new variants, BQ.1 and BQ1.1, are both sub-variants of BA.5, otherwise known as Omicron. Both BQ.1 and BQ1.1 carry mutations in their spike proteins. In theory, this can make it more difficult for your immune system to recognize the virus and begin attacking it (Scientific American). While both variants are spreading quickly, it is unclear whether these variants will continue to account for larger percentages of new cases or if they will cause more severe illness (CNBC). What is clear, however, is that the same preventative measures that we have taken throughout the pandemic prove effective against these new strains.
Symptoms and How it Spreads
Similar to the other variants, BQ.1 and BQ1.1 both spread between people through air droplets that contain the virus. These droplets and particles can be breathed in by other people or land on their eyes, noses, or mouths (CDC). These two new variants have not shown to have different or more severe symptoms compared to past variants. Possible symptoms include:
Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea (CDC).
Prevention
Experts warn that letting your guard down this winter could cause cases and hospitalizations to rise. The CDC recommends wearing a mask, opening windows when inside with others, social distancing, tested if you feel any symptoms, and keeping up with your COVID-19 vaccinations (CDC). COVID-19 vaccine recommendations are based on three factors:
Your age
The vaccine your first received
The length of time since your last dose (CDC).
